Bud Break: The Start of the Growing Season

Initial Signs of Growth

As the growing season begins, prune wounds start to drip water and the spurs swell. This signals the awakening of the plant, and a small fuzzy bud appears just below the prune wound, typically on opposite sides of the spur.

Photosynthesis and Active Growth

The emerging bud pushes out leaves, initiating the process of photosynthesis. With this, the plant becomes fully active, and growth accelerates rapidly. The next stages include cane growth followed by fruit development.

Flowering and Crop Setting

Berries soon begin to flower, marking the critical period when the crop is set. Bloom is especially important, as extreme temperatures or strong winds during this time can prevent flowers from self-pollinating, causing the clusters to shatter and negatively impacting the yield.

Outlook for 2026

With an early bud break and favorable weather conditions, 2026 is shaping up to be a banner year for growth and production.
