Acquarello: In Depth

June 11, 2016

Tucked along the banks of the Estrella River, just a few miles north of our winery, lies a vineyard unlike any other—Acquarello, named after the Italian word for watercolor. Its name pays homage to the flowing waters that once shaped its rugged, sloping terrain, leaving behind sandy, silty soils and a distinct topography that speaks to its ancient riverbed origins.

A Site That Challenges and Rewards

Today, 33 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Sangiovese flourish on this dynamic site. But growing grapes at Acquarello is no easy task. The vineyard's proximity to the riverbed subjects it to extreme diurnal temperature swings and variations in ripening, demanding meticulous care and attention throughout the growing season.

In spring, cold air settles into the lowest points of the valley, bringing with it the constant threat of frost. By midsummer, however, the vines are met with intense sunlight and soaring daytime temperatures—often exceeding 100°F—which rapidly push the fruit toward optimal maturity before harvest in early autumn.

The result? Small yields of intensely concentrated fruit that translate into wines of structure, nuance, and expressiveness—each bottle capturing the spirit of this extraordinary place.

Signature Releases from Acquarello

2012 Le Vigne di Acquarello – Cabernet Sauvignon

Our inaugural release from the vineyard, this vintage set the tone for Acquarello’s future. Rich, layered aromas of cassis, cedar, and Bing cherry unfold into a polished palate of cranberry, cherry cola, tobacco, and silky, refined tannins. A true expression of the land: powerful yet elegant.

2013 Le Vigne di Acquarello – Petit Verdot (Wine Club Exclusive)

Traditionally used in blending, Petit Verdot is often known for its bold tannins and firm structure. But from the Acquarello vineyard, something remarkable happened: the grape softened. This single-varietal bottling offers all the depth and complexity you'd expect—ripe black fruit, floral lift, and spice—yet with surprising approachability. It’s a wine that showcases the full varietal character while remaining beautifully drinkable from the start.

Looking Ahead

Acquarello continues to be a vital source of inspiration—and incredible wine—for our estate portfolio. With each vintage, it reveals new potential, new expressions, and new stories waiting to be uncorked.

Stay tuned for upcoming releases from this remarkable site. The next chapter is just around the corner.
